I saw acclaimed Raw Food and health advocate David Wolfe speak at his lecture in Brisbane, Australia last Sunday night and thoroughly enjoyed it. I highly recommend going to any of these events as they pass near your home. David’s lectures are pretty casual, full of great facts and always highly entertaining.
The Brisbane lecture was awesome, but the permaculture day yesterday was absolutely amazing! Being a more intimate affair, it was like having David, Bruce Horowitz and Tania Leilani as really intelligent personal friends whose brains you could pick for knowledge all day! LOL
Tania’s 200 acre property is absolutely stunning, with an abundance of fruit trees, herb and vegetable gardens and an incredible view over the valley with the creek flowing below and waterfalls popping out of the cliffs in front of us. It is my dream property. There is also the fact that the house is fed it’s water from a natural spring higher up the property which means that you can drink mineral rich natural spring water straight from the tap! Certainly beats chlorine and fluoride, that’s for sure!
The group was made up from a great bunch of like minded people who are extremely knowledgeable in their own right. Tania gave us all a tour through her fruit forest and gardens, showing us what trees grow best with others in their natural guilds, we saw how she had made a natural sage hedge fence to keep the wallabies out of her veggie garden and how she kept the chickens safe in their bamboo enclosure.
We learned how she had grown all of these incredibly large plants in just ten years from a bare canvas of a few cow paddocks! We learned to add plants that are going to provide large amounts of mulch naturally and how to build swales to capture water. There was so much knowledge being shared throughout the day that it is impossible to cover it all here.
We then spent some time hanging out on the deck while David gave an informal and relaxed, but still extremely informative talk from a hammock sharing his experiences in growing food and harvesting water over the years in Canada and Hawaii.
We were also treated to a delicious feast of raw salads and deserts which were made mostly from fruit and veggies grown in Tania’s garden. These tasty dishes were made by Tania and her friends with a little help from Bruce. Another highlight of the day was being able to taste test beautiful fruits straight from the trees while we were being shown around the property.
